Many Security Holes in the Microsoft Frontpage extensions

In recent days we noticed that many people suffering for hacking activities with their site, and they migrate on CentrioHost only to prevent their site from being hacked. We already post some article for them how to prevent site hacking. We just recently noticed that web-hosts offering FrontPage Extensions on their site also get hacked now-a-days :( Here we explain about this issues....
 
 
First of all, Frontpage is brain damaged (just have to set the stage).

Ok, Frontpage works like this when you want to publish files:

It tries to GET "http://www.yourdomain.com/_vti_inf.html".  This file contains the version of the FP extensions and the path on the server where the extensions are located. When you use Frontpage to upload content, it will try and fetch this file, if it can, it then tries to POST to :
"http://www.yourdomain.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc" (that's the default).

This server binary is not password protected, so it is able to post a query to it.  The first thing it does is just establish a protocol rev in which the client and server are going to talk, and what functions the server provides.

If you have any people using Frontpage, it's likely that they FTPed the _vti_inf.html from their home machine up to your site.  Then they tried to publish, and it tried HTTP first.  If HTTP fails, it just kicks over to FTP as the publishing protocol (and notifies the user that they can't use WebBots and stuff).

Incidentally, I have a passion to hate the FP extensions.  They are fundamentally stupid in nearly all respects of implementation.

Firsly, they maintain a crapload of meta files (one shadow for every file managed) then they have all of their config info in a bunch of text files in the _vti_pvt directory.  (Oh, BTW, there exists a very HUGE privacy hole in the FP extenstions).  If you go to a site that has FP extensions, just pick any directory in the URL, yank the filename off, and put "_vti_cnf" there instead...you'll get a complete listing of all the files in the real directory.  With this you can snatch files that weren't meant to be seen by the public...and it's available on ALL FP enabled sites.

Hmm, I've contributed a "privacy bug" now. :)

Just snarf the "administrators.pwd" and "authors.pwd" file in:

"http://www.yourdomain.com/_vti_pvt/administrators.pwd"

That'll net you the password file for the web.  Just convert it properly and run Crack on it to obtain a useful password for defacing web sites!

Frontpage 98 fucks up the permissions so bad that it makes the _vti_pvt directory WORLD WRITABLE!!! No shit, you can do whatever you want to stuff in that directory.

10 tips - How to promote your website

How to switch hosts without having any down time?

Switching to a new host can be a complicated process. Follow our steps to ensure that your move is smooth and painless.
 
  1. The first step is to join your new host. Make sure to NOT cancel with your old hosting provider, and do not tell them you will be canceling. Keep this a secret from your old host, or they could prematurely terminate your site and cause downtime.
     
  2. At this point, you should have hosting accounts with two hosting providers (the old and the new one). You will now migrate your entire site from the old host to the new one. This can be done by connecting to the old host's FTP and downloading all your files, and then by connecting to the new host's FTP and uploading all your files (maintain the same file and folder structure). If you choose to make CentrioHost your new host, we may transfer your entire site over free of charge!
     
  3. You must also backup any databases on the old host (contact the old host for instructions) and upload the backup files to the new host via FTP. You must then restore your databases from those backup files; this can be done via SSH or cPanel's phpMyAdmin. Emails do not normally transfer, but you can archive your emails from the old host. You can accomplish this by making a POP3 connection to each email address; this way all the old emails are downloaded to your local computer. The new host will not have those old emails, but the new host will be able to get new emails.
     
  4. If you choose to make CentrioHost your new host, we may transfer your entire site (files and databases) over free of charge! If your old host used cPanel, we may be able to transfer emails as well.
     
  5. After you have a copy of your site on both hosting accounts, it is time to change your domain name's DNS....
     
  6. After you have all your files on both hosting accounts, it is time to change your domain name's DNS. Your new host will provide you with the correct name servers (DNS). You may need to contact the new host to find out what DNS settings you will use for your domain name.
     
    DNS name servers usually looks like this (replace "yourhostname.com" with your host's actual domain name):
    ns1.yourhostname.com
    ns2.yourhostname.com
     
    Once you have the correct DNS, go to the company where you purchased your domain name to make the change. If you purchased your domain name from your host, you usually need to ask them to make the DNS changes for you. You can tell them something similar to, "Hello. My domain with you is _____.___ ; please, change my domain name's name servers to ns1._______.____ and ns2._______.____ ."

  7. Once your DNS changes have been made, you will need to wait 48 hours (two days) before your site will load from the new host. During this 48 hour period, your DNS is propagating world wide and your site will be randomly loading from either the old host or the new host. Once the two days is complete, your site will only be loading from the new host.
     
  8. After the 48 hours have passed, your updated DNS will be fully functional. You will now contact your old host and cancel your hosting account with them. If you originally bought your domain name from the old host, do not cancel your domain registration.
If you completed all the above steps, you have successfully switched hosts with no downtime at all!

DO NOT UPLOAD MORE THEN ONE DEFAULT DOCUMENT (for e.g. index.htm, default.htm) into root folder.

STEP 8: Viewing your site after upload

Improve WordPress Performance - Part (1)

WordPress caching is the fastest way to improve performance. If your site is getting hit right now install W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache.

Caching Plugins                      

Plugins like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache can be easily installed and will cache your WordPress posts and pages as static files. These static files are then served to users, reducing the processing load on the server. This can improve performance several hundred times over for fairly static pages.
If your posts/pages have a lot of dynamic content configuring caching can be more complex. Search for "WordPress cache plugin" for more info.

Browser Caching                        

Browser caching can help to reduce server load by reducing the number of requests per page. For example, by setting the correct file headers on files that don't change (static files like images, CSS, JavaScript etc) browsers will then cache these files on the use's computer. This technique allows the browser to check to see if files have changed, instead of simply requesting them. The result is your web server can answer many more 304 responses, confirming that a file is unchanged, instead of 200 responses, which require the file to be sent.

Como primera medida hay que tener en cuenta que debes estar registrado como "Entidad Registrante" y como "Persona Responsable" para poder iniciar éste o cualquier otro trámite en NIC.AR.

Se recomienda leer las "Preguntas frecuentes" y las "Guías interactivas" en relación a los trámites realizados en NIC.AR.

1- Ingresar en www.nic.ar

2- Seleccionar del menú el enlace "Trámites vía web"

3- En la columna "ALTAS" hacer click en "dns"

4- Deberás ingresar el email con el que estás registrado (el usado para crearte como "Entidad Registrante" y como "Persona Responsable")

5- Ingresar la dirección IP y el nombre del servidor que le corresponda y continuar.

Por ejemplo:

23.45.65.21
ns1.tuservidor.com


6- Ahora deberás ingresar el nombre (o parte del mismo) de tu "Entidad Registrante". Al continuar verás un listado donde debes aparecer.

7- Selecciona tu "Entidad Registrante" de ese listado. Y continúa.

8- En "Seleccion del operador" puedes ingresar el nombre que tienes como "Persona Responsable". Buscar. Al continuar verás un listado donde debes aparecer.

9- Selecciona tu nombre de ese listado. Y continúa.

10- En la pantalla final verás los datos ingresados para tu nameserver, la entidad administradora y el operador. Deberás confirmar esos datos clickeando en el botón "Confirmar"

11- Al hacer esa confirmación te llegará un email desde nic.ar (al email que ingresaste al comienzo del proceso) que deberás responder sin cambio alguno. (Recibirás un acuse de recibo momentos mas tarde o una notificación de que ha sido rechazado consignando el motivo)

12- Luego de aproximadamente 48/72 hs. el nameserver estará dado de alta y será operativo.

Para crear tu segundo nameserver deberás repetir los pasos anteriores ingresando la segunda IP y el segundo nombre (ns2.tuservidor.com). No es necesario que esperes la confirmación del primero para hacerlo, puedes hacerlo inmediatamente después de haber realizado el primer ingreso.

How can I prevent hacking?

Now-a-days we have received numerous support tickets from our customers regarding how they can prevent their site being hacked and increase their security. Here we added some special tips to prevent their site being hacked.

1. The most important thing to do is keep your passwords a secret. If you must give a password to someone, be sure to change it when they are done using the access. Don't write your passwords down or share them with too many people. Periodically change your passwords. You can find more by searching "How can I make a stronger password?"
 
2. Along the same idea, you need to make sure your personal computer does not have viruses, trojans, keyloggers, etc.
 
3. Keep your scripts and downloaded programs updated. Always upgrade to the latest version of your blog, forum, shopping cart, etc.
 
4. Do not have writable file permissions. The correct permissions are normally 755 or 644, and you can check these in your File Manager. Most users know to avoid 777 permissions, but you really want to avoid any permission settings which allow Group and World writing. (That's anything ending in 7, 6, 3, or 2. The first number can be one of these, but not either of the last two numbers.)

SQL injection, insertion - Security Tips

SQL injection is a code injection technique that exploits a security vulnerability occurring in the database layer of an application. The vulnerability is present when user input is either incorrectly filtered for string literal escape characters embedded in SQL statements or user input is not strongly typed and thereby unexpectedly executed. It is an instance of a more general class of vulnerabilities that can occur whenever one programming or scripting language is embedded inside another. SQL injection attacks are also known as SQL insertion attacks.

SQL injection is an attack where malicious code is passed to an SQL Server for execution. The attack can result in unauthorized access to confidential data, or destruction of critical data.

Before you try to read the methods below, realize that this should only be a concern for PHP developers and the like. If you are using a database driven program (e.g. WordPress, Joomla, OSCommerce), then all you need to do is upgrade your programs to the latest version available.
  

Methods to prevent SQL injection

  
Escaping
One way to prevent injections is to escape dangerous characters (i.e. backslash, apostrophe and semicolon). In PHP, it is typical to escape the input using the function mysql_real_escape_string before sending the SQL query. Example:

$Uname = mysql_real_escape_string($Uname);
$Pword = mysql_real_escape_string($Pword);
$query = "SELECT * FROM Users where UserName='$Uname' and Password='$Pword'";
mysql_query($query); 
  
Parameterized statements
A parametrized query uses placeholders for the input, and the parameter values are supplied at execution time.

$params = array($Uname, $Pword);
$sql = 'INSERT INTO Users (UserName, Password) VALUES (?, ?)';
$query = sqlsrv_query($connection, $sql, $params); 
   
Advanced: In PHP version 5 and above, there are multiple choices for using parameterized statements; the PDO database layer is one of them. There are also vendor-specific methods; for example, MySQL 4.1 + used with the mysqli extension.

An effective internal linking strategy is important for a few reasons: 1) It helps to increase page views and encourage readers to stay on your blog longer by providing enticing links to content that may interest them, and 2) it can help to improve the search engine rankings for your posts and pages.

In this article we’ll take a look at ten easy ways to improve the internal linking throughout your blog. Put these into action and you’ll be
well on your way to creating a more user-friendly blog and also helping your search engine rankings at the same time.

1. Use a sitemap


Sitemaps are not only important for helping visitors find what they’re looking for, but they’re also an easy way to increase the amount of internal links to your important pages. I’m not talking about XML sitemaps created for search engines (although they can be important too), but rather a sitemap for your readers with links to all of your posts, or at least your most important ones.WordPress users can use the Sitemap Generator Plugin from Dago Design to automatically create a sitemap for their blog. This plugin creates a helpful sitemap page with links to your posts arranged by category.

2. Create a FAQ


Frequently Asked Questions pages can help you to get internal links to your posts while using highly targeted keywords and phrases. Create some common questions readers might have that can be answered by your blog posts. Pose the question on the FAQ page and partially answer the question and provide a link to a particular post for more information. When phrasing the questions, use keywords that readers are likely to use when performing a search, as this can help to improve traffic from search engines. Also use keywords in the anchor text of the links to your posts.

3. Link to related posts


Linking to posts on similar topics can help your readers to find additional content that may interest them. Just as importantly, it can also improve the number of internal links to your blog posts. You can manually create related links at the end of your posts, or you can use a plugin to do it for you. WordPress users can download the Related Entries plugin.

4. Include links to your most popular posts on your sidebar
